Tom Hanks is standing by his son, Chet, who has spoken candidly about his addiction and recent recovery.
“As a parent, you love your kids unconditionally,” Hanks said. “You support them every step of the way.”
Chet Hanks, 25, posted a series of videos last month about his cocaine addiction. Over the summer there were reports that Chet was missing, when in fact he had been to rehab, he said.
“I've been trying to get my shit together,” Chet said in one video, “and I'm doing pretty damn good. I just really had to take a look at myself and my life… and just finally admit to myself that it wasn't working.”
Chet said that he was addicted to crack and cocaine, and that he was selling drugs as well. Now, he is happy to speak out about sobriety and encourage others to seek help.
“If I can change, you can change. There is a solution,” he wrote on Istagram. “There's nothing glorious about brining yourself closer to death or prison with each day of active addiction.”
Tom Hanks' statement at the premier of his new movie Bridge of Spies is the first time that he has talked about Chet's disease publically.
“You got to applaude the bravery and honestly when it actually comes out of your own house,” he said.
