Robert Downey Jr. discusses getting ‘out of that cave’

Robert Downey Jr. opens up to Vanity Faire in the October edition his past struggles with addiction, which led to rehab, arrest and imprisonment.

The star was first arrested in 1996 with heroin and cocaine in his car. He was sent to rehab but broke out twice. He spent about a year in jail, but was not ready to stay clean. In 2000, police found cocaine and methamphetamine in Downey’s hotel room.

“Job one is get out of that cave,” the actor said. “A lot of people do get out but don't change. So the thing is to get out and recognize the significance of that aggressive denial of your fate, come through the crucible forged into a stronger metal.”

Downey also discussed the biological basis for addiction, saying he believes that he inherited the disease, and passed it on to his son, Indio Downey, who was recently charged with drug possession.

“Pick a dysfunction and it's a family problem,” he said.
