For the first time, the Reel Recovery Film Festival will head south to Florida.
The Reel Recovery Film Festival, presented by Writers in Treatment, is a multi-day event celebrating film and creativity. The event showcases filmmakers who make honest films about addiction, alcoholism, behavioral disorders, treatment and recovery.
In Fort Lauderdale, Fla., from Nov. 2 to 4 at the Hyatt Bonaventure Resort and Spa, the festival will debut for the first time in the state. Other editions include Los Angeles, New York City and Vancouver, British Columbia.

Ron Tannebaum and Ken Pomerance, co-founders of one of the biggest social-networking websites for people in recovery — IntheRooms.com — are helping get the word out about the inaugural Florida event. Sponsored by Caron Renaissance and The Hanley Center and powered by Floridians for Recovery, the InTheRooms founders say they can’t wait for the event in a “beautiful and state-of-the-art venue.”
“It should be a lot of fun,” said Tannebaum. “There are fantastic films; just the fellowship of being together with a bunch of people enjoying films together is going to be exciting.”
The Reel Recovery Film Festival not only celebrates the art of film, but also the arts, writing, creativity and recovery, says Leonard Buschel, founder of the Los Angeles-based nonprofit, Writers in Treatment, which is producing the event.
“Writers in Treatment provides scholarships for treatment and free referral services. We also produce awareness and prevention programs that help reduce the stigma of addiction,” says Buschel. “After three years in Los Angeles, we are excited to bring the festival to the East Coast, which will enable us to reach new audiences and raise funds to help more individuals in need of our support.”

Pomerance says he hopes a tradition of a South Florida Reel Recovery Film Festival will continue. After the Friday night premiere, during the festival there may also be a special performance by Rockers in Recovery. The duo is working with the band, trying to combine the events to give attendees an added feature to the weekend.
Some members of the Rockers in Recovery All Star Band include Ricky Byrd of Joan Jett and the Blackhearts, Liberty DeVitto (Billy Joel), Christine Ohlman (SNL Band), Jeff Kazee (Southside Johnny, Bon Jovi), Chris Anderson (Asbury Juke Horns), Neal Pawley (Asbury Juke Horns), Muddy Shrews (Asbury Jukes), Richie Supa (Aerosmith), Kasim Sulton (Todd Rundgren), Woody Geissman (The Del Fuegos) and more.
Sponsorships for the Fort Lauderdale, Fla., event are still available. Those interested can contact Floridians for Recovery.
