From Kim Isaacs, coauthor of The Career Change Résumé: How to Reinvent Your Résumé and Land Your Dream Job and founder of ResumePower.com, here are five tips to kick start your search for that dream job.
1. Get connected with social media.
You can throw old-school job search tactics out the window. People are now finding jobs through social networking sites such as LinkedIn, Twitter and Facebook. Dedicate the time to cultivating your network, and use these sites to uncover job opportunities.
2. Invest in your career.
If you are spinning your wheels and not getting anywhere, you might need to invest in professional development courses or career services such as résumé writing and career coaching. The more marketable you are, the more effective your job search will be.
3. Ask for help.
Many career resources are free to job seekers such as Monster’s Career Advice Forums. You can post virtually any career-related question and get expert advice specifically for your situation.
4. Be flexible.
It might not be possible to land your dream job this very second, so consider all opportunities—even if you have to step outside your desired career path right now. You can still pursue your dream career, but sometimes it’s necessary to temporarily go in a different direction just to get a paycheck coming in.
5. Don’t procrastinate.
Do something that will help your job search every day—whether it’s adding connections on LinkedIn to re-tweeting a recruiter’s tweet on Twitter. Treat your job search like it is a job, and you will be on your way to finding a new position.
