Funnyman Jim Carrey doesn’t use substances of any sort to channel his inner comic.
“I am very serious about no drugs, no alcohol. Life is too beautiful,” the 50-year-old actor said in an interview with “60 Minutes.”
Carrey has been public about his struggles with depression, describing it as a “low-level” of despair. He did take Prozac for a period of time. However, over the long term he has learned that curbing all mind-altering substances, including coffee, and dedicating himself to spiritual growth is the best way to keep his darker side at bay.
“If you aren’t in the moment, you are either looking forward to uncertainty, or back to pain and regret,” he said. “My focus is to forget the pain of life. Forget the pain, mock the pain, reduce it. And laugh.”
That doesn’t mean he doesn’t experience it. Quite the contrary, he said.
“I don't think human beings learn anything without desperation. Desperation is a necessary ingredient to learning anything or creating anything. Period. If you ain't desperate at some point, you ain't interesting.”
