Singer and actress Demi Lovato – who is celebrating her 22nd birthday today – opened up about her experience with mental illness on E-News Monday evening.
“I've struggled a lot with mental illness and bipolar disorder…Just because I'm a pop star doesn't mean that everything is perfect,” the “Heart Attack” singer and former Disney star said.
Lovato, who is bipolar, has worked with the The Mental Health Listening & Engagement Tour to raise awareness and reduce stigma around mental illness.
“I've seen some dark times, especially with the depressive phase of the illness,” she said. “Bipolar depression really got my life off track, but today I'm proud to say I'm living proof that someone can live, love and be well with bipolar disorder when they get the education, support and treatment they need.”
Lovato has become an advocate for people with mental illness leading productive, healthy lives.
“I want to shine a light on the people out there who, like me, are learning to live well with mental illness by getting the right diagnosis and the right treatment plan,” she said.
