People turn to drugs and alcohol for many reasons. One of the reasons Parenthood star Dax Shepard started using drugs was to cope with being molested as a young child. Shepard opened up about being molested at age 7 and his subsequent addiction to drugs on The Jason Ellis Show on Sirius XM.
“It took me 12 years to tell anyone that,” Shepard said. “Then all that time, I was like, It’s my fault — as generic as that is — and I’m gay. I must have manifested this because I’m secretly gay.’ I had all these insane thoughts for 11 years or 12 years.”
But Shepard said it wasn't until he had a conversation with his mother about his molestation and addiction in which she told him, “If you’ve been molested, you only have a 20 percent chance of not being an addict.”
According to the Rape, Abuse & Incest National Network, victims of sexual assault are 13 times more likely to abuse alcohol and 26 times more likely to abuse drugs.
