'It is a major retreat from the effort to save lives in the opiate epidemic.'

The Republican plan to replace the Affordable Care Act would drop the addiction treatment mandate currently covering 1.3 million Americans, The Washington Post reports.

Beginning in 2020, the plan would eliminate the requirement that Medicaid covers basic substance abuse and mental health services. Instead, individual states could decide whether or not to include mental health coverage in their Medicaid plans. This could be incredibly devastating in states bearing the brunt of the opiate crisis, including Ohio, Kentucky and West Virginia.

“Taken as a whole, it is a major retreat from the effort to save lives in the opiate epidemic,” Joshua Sharfstein, associate dean at Johns Hopkins Bloomberg School of Public Health, told the Post.
